Wrapping Up Jeddah

As I sat in my apartment in Maracaibo, I found myself filtering through some old photos of my time in Jeddah. It occurred to me that I didn't have the time to post some photos and videos that were worth posting.

My time in Jeddah was full of ups and downs, and it is hard to put into words the cumulation of experiences one can have in a rather extreme Muslim state in the 21st century. Only now do I feel I have the perspective necessary to reflect on Jeddah. That being said, I'm not going to because it doesn't matter. I'm just going to share some photos and videos because I like them.

I did a commercial for MBS's new pet project in the northern region of Saudi. It is called the Red Sea Project and is said to be one of the most ambitious tourism programs as Saudi looks to steal some of the UAE's tourists. It will be focused on ecotourism and, from what I observed, is practicing what they preach in regards to protecting the environment. Good for them.

Either way, we were driving to the coast for a shoot and I took this video. I thought it was cool, so here it is.

Frontyard cats

The cats were a big part of living in Jeddah, and just like the cats, my students were a big part of the experience as well. Both the cats and my students were curious, excitable, and thought they were better than everyone else (and I say that with love).

Easily one of the best groups of kids I ever taught in my career.
Last day of school (Ibrahim!)

But enough of those crazy kids.

I appreciate a lot of the connections and friendships I made in Jeddah. I met some very good people there.

Final hoo-rah with Calan, myself, Modise, and Matthew (L-R)

After a day in the sun, I spent a final evening with one of the kindest, sweetest, and most beautiful people on planet Earth. She is a little angel and I miss her immensely.

Me and my main man Matthew. Last day for me walking away from that building.

Matthew and I met over Zoom in September 2020. We both started in the English department before I moved over to Social Studies. He is an exceptional teacher and a brilliant poet. When we finally met in Washington, DC en route to Jeddah, we became pals over the course of a drink or 8. Our conversations as lifting buddies were a wonderful combination of hilarious, insightful, and ridiculous. I look forward to the next time we meet.
