Pingyao

Updated: Apr 26, 2020

Pingyao City 平遥市, Shanxi Province 山西省,平遥

Pingyao 平遥 is one of the last remaining "ancient" towns, meaning it still has its walls that were built to keep out invaders. The walls were constructed in the 14th century during the Ming Dynasty 明代 and Pingyao was a major financial hub for hundreds of years.

Pingyao was very smoggy when I arrived which was partly due to government-sanctioned chemical plants nearby and partly because of local dependency on charcoal as fuel. Regardless, it is a cool town to spend a few days.

A walk on the top of the wall.

A glance inside a residential courtyard.

One of my favorite photos.

Mahatma Gandhi said the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
