Great Sand Dunes National Park, CO

Updated: Apr 23, 2020

San Luis Valley, Colorado, USA.

A short climb over some hills from Zapata Falls gives a good shot of the Dunes. These dunes are the tallest sand dunes on the North American continent. If my memory serves me, they are formed from winds blowing from the southwest corner of the San Luis valley, depositing debris in this northeast corner.

The unique part of these dunes are the snow-capped mountains which provide an uncommon contrast. This was taken during sunrise.

Grandma and Grandpa!

Sand gets everywhere. This is at the top of High Dune, standing at 650 ft (198m). I'm constantly amazed that wind blows the top of the dunes down the other side, but the dunes remain in one general location. Time is indeed relative.

Another morning photo. This is facing south. The New Mexico state border is approximately along the horizon.

I love the dunes. The Great Sand Dunes NP is an underrated and infrequently visited spot in Colorado. Much of my spare time was spent here wandering aimlessly.
